The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
