Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
