Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
